3 Ways You Can Keep Children Calm in an Emergency

3-ways-you-can -keep-children-call-in-an -emergency

Homes, daycares, preschools… all these are often deemed as a safe place for young children. However, that is not always the case. The lingering threat of accidents, disasters, and calamities, and bad people always remain. In these situations, would you be able to help your young one remain calm while an evacuation is being facilitated?

Keeping a cool temperament in high tension scenarios improves your child’s safety significantly. But, how do you teach a child to remain calm during such situations? Strategic Educational Consulting, LLC has enumerated a couple of techniques that can guide you:

  1. Teach them what to do

Confusion breeds fear, and fear leads to panic. But if you educate your child as early as now on what should be done, it will allow them to face different situations without feeling scared.

Being an Emergency Preparedness Consultant in Washington, DC, we encourage you to:

    • Changing Dosage SizeInstruct your child about calling 911. Tell them that they should only dial this number when there is an immediate emergency. You can also give them a spiel to say when making the call.
    • Help your child memorize important information such as their complete name, address, and an emergency contact number. Ask them to recite this information often so that it is retained in their memory.
  2. Let them practice

It’s not enough that your little one knows what to do, they should also be able to act on what they have learned. Otherwise, they can end up feeling panicked and distraught. But how do you exactly emulate an emergency situation in a safe environment?

There are a few things in which you can tackle this dilemma:

    • For starters, you can recreate a certain situation through role-playing. This will help a child put into practice what they have learned, enabling them to be more ready when the need for such skills arise.
    • You can also simply start a discussion with a child. Try asking them what they would do in a certain situation. Don’t be alarmed in case they give an incorrect answer. Instead, see it as an opportunity in which you can guide a young one better.
  3. Give them reassurance

In the end, children are still children. They will reflect how you (as the parent) will act in dire situations. That’s why it’s important for you to take the time to have Disaster and Risk Management Training.

By being properly equipped with the right knowledge and skills, you will be able to better keep your child calm and help them properly evacuate during certain situations. Having this type of training does not just benefit you and your household either. In fact, you can apply it in your office and everyday life as well!
