In 2016, SEDC identified and established multiple Shelter-In-Place (SIP) rooms on each floor of a vital District government building. SEDC developed SIP criteria through research that included FEMA, OSHA, International Code Council guidance documents, International Building Code requirements, and industry best practices.
Using a site survey, we identified potential SIP locations with minimal disruption to normal operations. After creating a list of potential locations, SEDC created zones for each floor of the building, corresponding with numbered stairwells whenever possible. The establishment of SIP zones helped ensure that no location would exceed capacity in an emergency. As a result, all building occupants, clients, visitors, and guests have established Shelter-in-Place rooms in the event of an emergency.
