Forest fires, hurricanes, earthquakes, and floods. These are just a few of the things Mother Nature can do against the human species. Often times (if not all the times), we are powerless against her rage. When she is angered, nothing will stop her from rampaging. As seen before, her environmental tantrums can cost too many lives. So that you and your loved ones may not joint the growing loss, learn how to survive!
To become fully equipped with survival skills, it is useful to participate in a Disaster and Risk Management Training. And if you are looking for a comprehensive course in Washington DC, our team at Strategic Educational Consulting, LLC can guide you through!
In this post, we shall mention five of the most crucial things you can do in the middle of a natural catastrophe.
- Find a safe place
The term “safe place” can vary depending on which natural disaster is happening. In case of flooding and forest fires, the most ideal shelters would be evacuation centers. If your home is in the affected area, do not attempt to go back until the situation is neutralized. For hurricanes and earthquakes, staying at home is recommended. Going out before everything calms down intensifies the risks of injury and death. - Do not stay in a car
If you want to get away from the area of catastrophe, do so before or after the disaster and never during. Even if you are in a car, the vehicle may not be strong enough to protect you from natural forces. But if you happen to be on the road and a calamity hits, try to park near a sturdy structure. Take cover. - Stay away from live wires
If you know that a catastrophe is going to hit, insulate your wirings beforehand. This will be helpful because the insulation process might become too challenging if done during the disaster proper. Do not be too complacent. Just because a pole seems harmless does not mean that it no longer has electricity. - Stay with a group
It is unwise to be alone during disasters. With no one else around, nobody can offer help should you suffer from injuries and the like. Also, the fear brought by loneliness can intensify during trying times. If possible, just be within short distances away from your peers. - Keep calm
Most importantly, get a good hold of your senses! Do not allow the situation to disturb your concentration. Keep in mind that you can survive. Panicking will only make things worse. Take a few breathes to clear your mind and heart. Before moving, try to review the consequences of your actions. Consult other people’s opinions too.
